Granite Trucks Destroying Mutoko Bridges And Roads

Major roads linking Mutoko North Constituency and Nyamapanda highway are in real sorry and degraded state due to heavy trucks carrying the black granite stone from various extraction sites in the resource rich district of Mutoko. Many small bridges have been destroyed beyond repair and the last bridge linking Chindenga community has been left tattered and patched with granite blocks to create a temporary passage of the heavy trucks.

A small bridge close to Mutoko Centre along Nyadire road has also collapsed leaving a very narrow passage thereby creating a death trap for motorists in one of Mutoko’s busiest rural roads.
The average tonnage allowed to cross the strategic Nyadire bridge is 7 tonnes but heavy trucks carrying over 28 tonnes enjoy the route daily. It has been rumoured that Nyadire bridge has developed some cracks due to these heavy trucks.
A youth from Manhemba community lamented that these roads were created to only accommodate light and medium weight trucks but these granite miners enjoy destroying our roads without reparations.
Agriculture farmers in the Constituency are enduring hard times transporting their produce because of poor road network.
The mining companies pay a paltry one dollar per tonne as royalties for the precious stone but many economic analysts have regarded the amount as too little.

Local traditional chiefs had proposed that the companies must construct their own roads that will lead them to the highway to save local road infrastructure from destruction but the idea has not seen the light of day.
