Even in death, Zimbabwe’s economic challenges continue to be a major cause of concern for Zimbabweans and a major headache for President Emerson Mnangagwa, who presided over the burial of Mugoba.
Mnangagwa saw an opportunity to re-assure Zimbabweans gathered for the burial of Mugoba at the National Heroes Acre on Wednesday. He said he was aware of the “current economic hardships being experienced” by Zimbabweans.
He cited current economic reforms as one of the major causes of the current economic hardships in Zimbabwe. Inflation has been on upward spiral as prices continue to increase, fueled by rapid increases in the exchange rate.
“My government will be rolling out more social safety nets to cushion the vulnerable members of our society,” Mnangagwa said.
However, a sign of doubt from the crowd could be seen on their faces, with some expressing their disgruntlement through whispers.
