National Constitutional Assembly, African Democratic Party turn down MDC-T “Convergence” Coalition Offer
he African Democratic Party (ADP) and the Nation Constitutional Assembly (NCA) have turned down an invitation to be part of a grand coalition to be spearheaded by the MDC-T.
Referred to as ‘national convergence’, the proposed coalition is the brainchild of the MDC-T and was recently announced by the party’s spokesperson Dougla Mwonzora.
It is intended to be fully unveiled at the MDC-T’s 14th anniversary commemorations scheduled to be held in Masvingo this weekend under the theme “Towards a National Convergence: Mobilising for Victory.”
Despite the fact that the MDC-T national spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora is confident about the National convergence other opposition parties have denied having any interest in a coalition led by the MDC-T.
Speaking at a meeting held in the capital last week ADP President Marcellina Chikasha turned down the idea of ‘national convergence’ saying that opposition parties in Zimbabwe do not have democratic space to deal with problems being faced by Zimbabweans.
“The Zimbabwean hitches needs more than a convergence and we (the opposition) do not have the democratic space to deal with the countless problems being faced by the Zimbabweans,” said Chikasha.
She went on to point that the opposition should focus on findings ways to deal with the day to day problems being faced by Zimbabweans rather than spending money on convergences that will yield nothing.
“As Zimbabweans we are known for best policies but when it comes to rolling out issues we are actually far behind, we need to change our mindsets and desist from the mentality of coming up with brilliant names for policies that will yield nothing,” said Chikasha.
Chikasha who claims that she has what it takes to lead Zimbabwe opted for a more practical convergence.
“We would rather join the MDC-T in cleaning the streets and feeding starving children rather than coming to a convergence that will yield nothing,” she said.
The national spokesperson of NCA, Madock Chivasa accepted the invitation with caution.
He said that NCA is not interested in joining a convergence that will see only the MDC-T fielding a presidential candidate.
“As NCA we are clear that we will field our own president and hence it is impossible to agree to a convergence that will be used for personal benefits.
“The MDC-T is not new to the NCA. It is not about just being invited we have our own fears ,” said Chivasa.
According to MDC-T spokesperson the convergence will see issues of unemployment, the dilapidating economy and the failing health sector being discussed.
