The Media Centre, established in August 2010, is a non-profit making media
organisation which operates as a Private Voluntary Organisation (PVO).

Mission Statement
Our mission is to work with marginalised communities, disadvantaged social groups,
the media and civil society towards increasing access to empowering information.

Vision
Open and accessible media for an open society.

Services and Programme Areas
 Designing and implementing media advocacy initiatives for Community
Based Organisations (CBOs) and marginalised communities;

 Development Support Communication;

 Media literacy capacitation;

 Facilitating media reportage on climate change, gender justice, social
inclusion and other issues affecting marginalised communities and
disadvanttaged social groups;

 Facilitating access to new information technologies by people in marginalised
communities.
 Citizen journalism capacitation.

 Facilitates media, information and digital security for journalists, human rights
defenders, citizen journalists and civil society;

 Facilitates free expression, access to information and media coverage for
people in marginalised communities, minorities and community based
activists;

 Facilitates and conducts media training for journalists, citizen journalists,
activists, civil society, political parties, polivcy makers and media students in
areas such as investigative reporting, media and information security, social
media and information communication technologies, political communication,
handling of the media and others;

 Facilitates investigative and communicative reportage on corruption, human
rights abuses, climate change, operations of extractive industries, social
inclusion, environmental protection and othder pertinent issues affecting
marginalised communities and disadvantaged social gropups;

 Provides a platform for public debates ,press conferences , roundtable
discussions , public meetings and think tank sessions with the view of
upholding truth telling and intergrity in the media by all democratic means;

 Provides video conferencing facilities to journalists and civil society
organisations;

 Facilitates media advocacy campaigns in relation to human rights protection,
protection of the environment and natural resources, climate change
mitigation, gender and other pertinent political and socio-economic issues;

 Capacitating marginalised schools with information and communication hubs.

 

Membership And Beneficiary Statement
All freelance journalists and other journalists who are not attached to particuklar
media institutions can be members of the Media Centre. The Media Centre is also
open for use by Information departments of Civil Society organisations, citizen
journalists and media students.Organisations who have benefited from the services
provided by the Media Centre include the Zimbawe Human rights Association
(Zimrights), Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), Radio Voice of the People,
which utilises the Media Centre broadcast studio to record its current affairs
programme, Talking Point, Voice of America’s Studio 7, Christian College of
Southern Africa (CCOSA), Zimbabwe Peace Project, Platform for Youth and
Community Development, Buhera Residents Trust, a weekly newspaper, the South
African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and others Guests for Talking Point have
included the European Ambassador to Zimbabwe, political analysts such as John
Makumbe, civil activists, political party leaders and others. Marginalised schools that
have been capacitated through media literacy, information and communication hubs
include Chatikobo, Nemadziva, Murove, Muchuwa, Mutiusinazita and Chapanduka
Secondary Schools in the marginalised Buhera South community.

Governance
The Media Centre is a non profit organisation , which consists of a management board and the secretariat. The Board of Management is made up of people dawn from media organisations, Civil Society, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) business and the legal fraternity. The Board is chaired by Mr. Harrison Nkomo, a Human Rights lawyer who is deputised by Ms. Ellen Kandororo-Dingane of the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN). Other Management Board members include Ms. Patience Zirima, Executive Director of Gender Media Connect (GMC), Professor Wallace Chuma a media lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Mr. Owen Dliwayo, a community media expert and Ms. Gamuchirai Masiyiwa , a journalist attached to the Global Press Journal. Mr. Earnest Mudzengi is the current Executive Director of the organisation.
